Google Performance Max Now Has Asset Experiments — Indian Advertisers Can Finally Test What Is Actually Working
From April 2026, Performance Max campaigns support asset experiments. Combined with Real-Time Policy Reviews and the June 2 API update, Indian businesses running PMax can now test creatives properly instead of guessing.
Performance Max has been the dominant campaign type in Google Ads since 2022. It runs across Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, and Maps simultaneously — optimised entirely by Google's AI. The problem Indian advertisers have had since day one: no way to test which creative assets are actually driving results. That changed in April 2026.
What asset experiments actually do
Asset experiments in Performance Max work like a proper A/B test for your creative inputs. You create a control group (your existing asset mix) and an experiment group (a new set of headlines, descriptions, images, or videos), and Google splits traffic between them to measure performance differences.
This matters because Performance Max has always been a black box for creatives. Google assigns performance labels — Low, Good, Best — to individual assets, but those labels do not tell you which specific combination is driving conversions. Experiments finally give you a controlled comparison with statistical validity.
Why this is significant for Indian service businesses
Most Indian businesses running PMax — real estate, coaching institutes, clinics, B2B services — have been optimising their campaigns based on gut feel about creative. They upload a set of images and headlines, let PMax run, and look at overall campaign ROAS. If results dip, they change everything at once and lose the ability to identify what caused the change.
Asset experiments let you isolate the variable. Test one new headline set against your existing headlines. Test vertical video against landscape images. Test a price-led message against a benefit-led message. Each experiment runs within the same campaign, on the same audience, in the same window — making results comparable.
Real-Time Policy Reviews: ad approval in seconds
Also from April 2026, Google rolled out Real-Time Policy Reviews for Responsive Search Ads. Ad review time dropped from several hours to seconds for standard ads. If your ad copy passes policy automatically, you can go from writing to live within minutes.
For Indian advertisers who frequently create time-sensitive campaigns — festival offers, admission deadlines, limited-seat promotions — waiting 24-48 hours for ad approval has been a recurring operational problem. That delay is now largely eliminated for Search ads.
The June 2 API update and what it means for measurement
Google's June 2 developer update touched the Structured Data Files API and measurement infrastructure. Combined with the May 28 Data Manager updates, Google is tightening the connection between ad clicks and downstream business outcomes — specifically for offline conversion import.
For Indian businesses using CRMs to track lead-to-customer conversion: if you are not importing closed deals back into Google Ads as offline conversions, Performance Max is optimising for the wrong signal. It is maximising form fills or calls — not customers. The new measurement infrastructure makes offline conversion import more accessible than it has ever been. The June 15 deadline for migrating to Data Manager API remains in effect.
How to use asset experiments now
In Google Ads, go to your Performance Max campaign, find the Experiments tab, and create a new asset experiment. Define your control group as your current asset mix and your experiment as the variation you want to test. Set a minimum two-week run time — anything shorter will not accumulate enough data for reliable conclusions.
Start with the highest-impact variable: your headline. In most Indian service categories, the difference between a headline that leads with price versus one that leads with speed or outcome is 20-40 percent in click-through rate. That is worth knowing before you scale spend.
The businesses that will extract the most value from Performance Max in the second half of 2026 are those who use the experiment infrastructure systematically — not those who simply spend more.
