Indian MSMEs Believe in AI. Only One in Four Has Actually Put It to Work
57% of Indian MSMEs see AI as a growth driver, yet only one in four uses it in daily workflows. What the latest studies show, and where to actually start.
Two major studies released this summer paint the same picture of India's small businesses: the belief in AI is there, the implementation is not. Yet.
What the data says
The Vi Business MSME Growth Insights Study 2026, drawn from its engagement with more than 2.5 lakh MSMEs across 16 sectors, found that 57% see AI as an important driver of growth, but only about one in four has actually built AI tools into operations and workflows. The sector's Digital Maturity Index rose to 60.8 in 2026, up from 58.0 in 2025.
A separate Google and India SME Forum report, based on a survey of 3,249 MSMEs, puts numbers on the upside. It projects that AI adoption could lift profitability by 30 to 35%, notes that AI pilots showed potential to cut operational costs by 20 to 30%, and estimates the sector-wide prize at USD 490 to 685 billion in added economic value.
Why the gap exists
The reasons are familiar to anyone who has sold software to a small business. Owners don't know where to start. Tools get bought before the problem is defined. A chatbot installed because a competitor has one quietly goes unused. And many MSMEs still run on patchy records, while automation needs clean, structured data to act on.
Where to start (and where not to)
- Start with a leak, not a technology. Pick the one repeated task costing you the most time or money: lead follow-ups, payment reminders, appointment confirmations.
- Automate the boring handoffs first. Lead assignment, reminder sequences and status updates are low-risk and show results within a month.
- Measure before and after. Response time, conversion rate, hours saved. If a tool can't move a number in 30 days, drop it.
- Save the AI-agent ambitions for step two. Agents perform best on top of a process that is already organised.
The one-in-four figure is not a ceiling. It is a head start for whoever moves next. In most local markets, the business that automates follow-up first simply wins more of the same leads.
