PayU Launches Agent HQ: Payment Gateways Are Turning Into Back-Office Automation Platforms
PayU's new Agent HQ lets Indian SMB merchants switch on AI agents for refunds, chargebacks, settlements and follow-ups, with no code, from the payments dashboard.
PayU has launched Agent HQ, a store of ready-made AI agents built directly into its merchant dashboard for Indian small and mid-sized businesses. The pitch is simple: the work that normally eats an ops person's week (chasing failed transactions, reconciling chargebacks, escalating refunds, tracking settlements) gets handed to agents that run inside the payment stack itself.
What Agent HQ actually does
- Operations agents for transaction follow-ups, chargeback reconciliation, refund escalations and settlement management.
- Growth agents that read a merchant's payment data (success and failure patterns, chargeback history, settlement cycles, shopper behaviour) and suggest targeted sales and marketing campaigns.
- AI discoverability, letting merchants make their products findable and purchasable inside AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude.
- Custom assistants for websites and apps that handle support and post-purchase questions.
Setup is no-code. Merchants activate agents from the dashboard, set the limits they operate within, and receive outputs by email or chat. Early adopters named at launch include Policybazaar, DailyObjects and Pinq Polka.
The bigger pattern
PayU is not the first mover here. Razorpay launched its own Agent Studio at FTX'26 in March, with agents for dispute responses, failed-payment recovery and abandoned carts, plus a plain-English agent builder. Two of India's largest gateways now position themselves less as payment processors and more as the operating layer of the business.
That matters for SMB owners because payments data is the most honest data a business has. It shows who paid, who didn't, who asked for a refund and who quietly disappeared. Automation built on that data acts on facts, not guesses.
What it doesn't solve
Payment-side agents start working once money moves. The leaks before that point (an enquiry nobody called back, a quote that went cold, an ad lead that sat untouched for two days) stay outside their reach. For most Indian SMBs, that is where the bigger losses sit.
The practical takeaway: if your gateway offers these agents, switch on the reconciliation and refund ones first. They are low-risk and save real hours. Then look upstream at how leads are captured and followed up, because that stretch of the funnel is the part no payment company is automating for you.
