Tata Communications Launches Subscription AI Agents for Indian SMBs, and Missed Calls Are the First Target
Tata Communications and TTBS launched subscription AI agents for SMBs. Early pilots: 30% better lead conversion and 20% more bookings from answering missed calls.
Tata Communications and Tata Tele Business Services (TTBS) have rolled out a subscription-based AI agent platform built specifically for small and mid-sized businesses in India. The agents connect to a company's own data and handle lead conversion, bookings and customer support, without the business needing to run servers or manage AI models.
The numbers from early pilots
Two pilot results stand out. One client reported 30% more leads converting into customers. Another grew bookings by 20% simply by having an agent answer calls that would otherwise have gone unanswered.
The second number is the one every SMB owner should sit with. Nothing about the product, the price or the ad spend changed. The only change was that someone, or something, picked up.
Why missed calls are so expensive
In our experience, most small businesses don't lose leads to competitors. They lose them to silence: calls during lunch, after hours, or while the owner is with another customer. A caller who hits a dead line rarely waits. They dial the next result on Google. Every one of those is a lead the business already paid to generate.
Tata's bet is that fixing this no longer needs a receptionist or a call-centre contract. It becomes a monthly subscription. The company is starting in India and has said it plans to take the platform global.
What to do with this
- Measure your leak first. Pull one week of missed-call logs. Most owners underestimate the count.
- Response speed beats response polish. An instant, basic acknowledgement outperforms a perfect reply four hours later.
- Close the loop. Answering is step one. The lead still needs a follow-up, a reminder and someone tracking whether it converted.
When one of India's largest telecom groups moves into SMB automation, it is a clear signal: capturing and following up every enquiry is becoming basic business infrastructure, not a luxury.
